As Gulf Coast communities across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama struggle to deal with the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, many survivors are facing dire conditions including contaminated water supplies and a lack of sanitation that could bring about cholera and other deadly diseases. The magnitude of the flooding left local officials unable to estimate how long it would take to restore drinking water to many of the region's cities.
